In Hinduism, Avatar refers to the descent of a deity from heaven to earth and is translated into English as "incarnation", but more accurately as "appearance" or "manifestation". In 2009, Avatar refers to James Cameron's sci-fi epic fantasy, which in Hollywood spell "BLOCKBUSTING BUCK$$$", but most likely translated as "onto a winner" or "a sure thing"...
It's 2154 and humans colonizers are fucking with Pandora, an alien moon. Ultimately it's all the corporation's fault and with the backing of trigger happy toy soliders, an indeginous population's peaceful existence is in jeopardy. Enter our hero, into the body of a Na'vi (the local aliens), that he then uses to gain their trust, and the ability to overcome his disability. Crossing boundaries, building / burning bridges, and eventually kiss n make ups, it's got all the trappings of the 'formula' of which only arthouse and indie flicks have been able to remedy. But give it a try you will. I did. I even wore the 3D specks. And my oh my was I taken along for the ride. Hook line and sinker. The visuals are gobsmacking, the performances animated, and even though the plot has got a lot of stick, it was entertainingly thought provoking. Did I want to save our planet? Not particulary. But I sure wanted to leave it to roam the forests of Pandora, painted blue, with my pet dragon and alien girlfriend.
